Avebury

Avebury stone circle

Avebury is not as well known as Stonehenge, but in some ways it is more impressive.

It is a huge earth works and stone circle ( not a perfect circle) structure that is 420 metres in diameter, which is four times larger than any other known circle in the UK. The ditches are upto 11 metres deep and 21 metres wide which must have been constructed by alarge number of workers over a long period. There are inner circles and an avenue of paired stones, but we can only guess at their cultural or religous significance, but it must have been incredibly important to them.

There is a village within the circle and the monument is maintained and manged by the National Trust that have a very informative visitors centre as pictured below.
