Bardford on Avon bridge

Bradford on Avon is located near the Wiltshire Somerset border and close to the roman city of Bath. it shares a similar feel and atmosphere to its larger neigbour having a history that dates back to Roman times. Its name is derived from it being a broad ford on the river Avon.

Bradford on Avon came in to its own in the 17th century when it became athriving wool town.Its location was the key to its success, not only being on the River Avon, but also has the kennet and Avon canal that runs through the town. As new techniques emerged in cloth manufacture, so local mills were powered by water and steam and the local industry thrived.

Bradford on Avon has a distinctive bridge with a domed building at one end. This was used for locking troblemakers up for the night. There are parts of the bridge that date back to the 13th century, but most of the current structure was built in the 17th-18th century.

One of the notable buildings in Bradford on Avon is a 14th century Tithe Barn that is 180 feet long .This is now part of Barton Farm Country Park.

Bradford on Avon is a picturesque town that deservedly attracts a good number of visitors. It has a good selction of shops and some lovely cafes and restaurants including the award winning Bridge Tea Rooms as pictured above. The tea rooms are situated next to the bridge in a beautiful building that dates back to 1675.
