Calne

Calne views

Calne is a mid sized town to the east of Trowbridge. Calne is situated on the River Marden, the Wilts and Berks Canal and the A4 road and these good historic travel links led to it being a stop over on the way to bring Irish pork to London. Haris factory became the major employer in the area until its closure in the 1980s. There is a statue of a pig that commeorated the towns connection to that industry.

Calne has a fine town hall, befitting its status as a prosperous town. It has some good traditional cottages on the Church green that date back to its time as a Wool town. One of these houses was lived in by Dr Jan Ingen Housz a Durch scientist who discovered Phoosynthesis, one of the fundamental principles of modern Biology.

The new library has a striking statue of a partially constructed head.
