Chippenham

Chippenham Views

Chippenham is a historic market town that probably dates back to pre Roman times.

One of the main landmarks in the town is the Buttercross (see centre picture above). This dates back to around 1570 and was used as a market for dairy and meat products. It was originally erected where Barclays Bank now stands in the centre of the high street. It was purchased privately and fell into disrepair before being renovated and put in its current central position as recently as 1995, at the junction of the high street. and the market place.

Other notable buildings include the Yelde hall which is a traditional wood framed building that is now used as a Tourist office (see right picture below). It also has the towns motto enscribed on it which is Unity and Loyalty. There is also Chippenham Museum & Heritage Centr, which has a history of the town along with other temporary exhibits and is housed in an impressive 18th century building, pictured above right.
