Trowbridge Town Hall

Trowbridge is situated on the River Bliss and is the county town of Wiltshire. The name of the town is possibly derrived from Tree Bridge. Its importance as a town is partially explained by its good transport linkls. It is situated on the Kennet and Avon canal, which was one of the main transport links in the early industrial period. It also has good railway links as part of the Wessex Main Line which links Southampton to Bristol.

Like other towns in the area, Trowbridge was quite involved in the clothing industry and at one point had a large number of factories. Other spinoff industries also took off including bed making.

Like nearby Calne, Trowbridge also became involved in the Pork production and Abraham Bowyer started the Bowyers firm which beacme the largest employer in the townuntil its closure in 2008.

Trowbidge's stature can be seen in the scale of its town hall which is a fine building that dominates the skyline of the town centre.
